Jun 2019 - Genealogy and Modern Technology

Nancy Trimble, Chair of our local genealogical society, and past president of the Ontario Genealogical Society, presented commentary for a set of slides developed by Anne Delong, another member of the local genealogical society.
During the last thirty years, the tools and resources available to people who enjoy researching their family trees have grown exponentially. Nancy showed how genealogists have changed their processes over time to take advantage of everything from message boards, optical character recognition, online databases, family tree software, social media, and even DNA comparison to find their relatives.

Feb 2019 - Wikipedia - the Encyclopedia Anyone Can Edit

Anne Delong, who is a Wikipedia Administrator and member of our Club, explained; Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website on the planet, and the world's most-consulted online information source. Its pages are viewed about 15 billion times each month. Founded in 2001, funded through donations, with content contributed almost entirely by volunteers, today Wikipedia provides information to readers in over 300 languages. The English Wikipedia alone has more than 5 million articles. Learn how the Wikimedia Foundation has managed to maintain the project as "the encyclopedia anyone can edit" without having it taken over by fake news, biased opinion and vandalism. Also find out how to judge the reliability of the information you read there.

A new provider of high speed fibre, (i.e.; - fibre right to the home) has set up business in Oshawa. Currently fibre has been placed in the ground in the neighbourhood closest to telMax's headquarters. Glen Dempster, Manager of Cyber Security at OPG (Ontario Power Generation), came from headquarters, in Toronto, to speak about his (and our) problems in maintaining security during online activities. Because OPG is responsible for monitoring sensitive nuclear and hydro operations throughout Ontario, their networks and internal systems must be constantly updated to protect against cyber attacks. He followed with useful advice for home users who may encounter scammers.
