David Mackey took our audience from the time of conceptualisation of computers,  before electronic digital devices, and into a possible quantum computer age.

October 2018 - telMax - Fibre to Homes

A new provider of high speed fibre, (i.e.; - fibre right to the home) has set up business in Oshawa. Currently fibre has been placed in the ground in the neighbourhood closest to telMax's headquarters. However, in areas not yet served by fibre to the home, telMax offers competitive prices through third party ISPs, with their own servers and with superior wireless routers.

Glen Dempster, Manager of Cyber Security at OPG (Ontario Power Generation), came from headquarters, in Toronto, to speak about his (and our) problems in maintaining security during online activities. Because OPG is responsible for monitoring sensitive nuclear and hydro operations throughout Ontario, their networks and internal systems must be constantly updated to protect against cyber attacks. He followed with useful advice for home users who may encounter scammers.

John Silvestervich recognized


Although John has been a member of the DPCUC for 17 years - many of those as president - much his earlier career in public education involved computer learning... starting with the introduction of the first personal computers. He's been taking some time off, from volunteering, to tend to both his family and to his own medical treatments. In recognition of John's devotion to our organization, he was presented with a lifetime membership in the Club.

Aug 09 2018 -Techboomers

Steve Black created and maintains a great set of resources for those wanting a quick and neat source of information for handling today's technology. Although Techboomers started out as a FYI/DIY for his parents, it has morphed into a "HELP ME!" resource for anyone... and it's now totally free. Steve is a Waterloo grad, residing in Canada. The Techboomers website is replete with tutorials (many with video and text journals), links for alternate software, and advice regarding security and privacy. We'll be showing parts of his APCUG podcast, and have a look at the website.

Anne Delong, and a few other club members, demonstrated sites they use when seeking helpful information regarding fixing, understanding, and keeping current with technology. The links are now on our club web site.


May 2018 - Home Automation

Brent Streeter has tested numerous devices in his own home, for controlling lighting, monitoring surroundings, and allowing access.
 During his live demonstration, Brent opened his garage, using a phone app, while monitoring all on a wireless camera. A similar set-up controls the front door lock and lighting in other parts of the house where cameras also monitor the area.

Les, a long time Oshawa computer expert and television host, has now steered his attention toward helping companies install and maintain their systems. Much of the 'fixing' can now be done remotely. He regaled us with tales related to his work, shifting from praise to complaint when comparing Windows 10 to all earlier versions.

February 2018 - Backup Strategies

Dan Saywell, of the Oshawa Canada Computers Store, provided extensive advice regarding the latest NAS devices and strategies for easy and guaranteed back-ups.
